FreeMe Video: Metallisation process of ABS plastic

admin

News

This video is the second of the FreeMe technologies series and highlights the metallisation process of ABS plastic, a key innovation led by Creative Nano (CNano) in the FreeMe project. The process reflects FreeMe’s commitment to Safe and Sustainable by Design principles, replacing traditional harmful methods with greener alternatives.

The video demonstrates each important stage, starting from preparing different solutions: etching, activation, electroless Ni-P plating, and neutralisation solutions. It then demonstrates key stages like degreasing to eliminate surface oils, and then etching to enhance microroughness. The activation step shows how nickel cations are absorbed on the etched surface, while the subsequent reduction step converts absorbed cations to metallic nickel. The final phases include electroless Ni-P plating, forming a conductive metallic layer, followed by copper electroless plating and electroplating, resulting in a fully metallised ABS product.

Through this video, CNano showcases a sustainable approach to plastic metallisation, eliminating the need for harmful chemicals like hexavalent chromium. This demonstration showcases FreeMe’s innovative efforts and commitment to environmentally friendly and safer industrial practices.
